Introduction

On the 29th of August 2009, FZD School of Design held our first Behind the Scene feature. We are honoured to be able to invite Ban Y.J. and Beng Huan of STiKFAS to collaborate with us on this event. For this exhibition, STiKFAS brought in some rare and previously unreleased prototypes plus archives and records of past productions. In addition to the STiKFAS exhibit, FZD also took the opportunity to showcase some of our student’s work in the gallery.

The event started with one of our instructors, TzeWei, giving an overview of what we do here in FZD. Relating to the audience a little about what the industry is like, he also hi-lights how the school uses a non-academic approach to prepare students for work within the industry.

The audience looks on as TzeWei continues on to explain how the school implements the non-academic philosophy into our curriculum.

Then, it was Feng’s turn to share his experiences . Touching on topics about life as a designer in this lighting-paced industry, he relates various experiences that spans from his time as a student to when he worked in Hollywood.

Next up was Ban Y.J. of STiKFAS. Ban shared his experiences of building the STiKFAS brand. He went on to talk about how it all started with drawing and his love of toys. He proceeded to share his thoughts about how education affects future creative minds.

Ban then passed the baton to his parter, Beng Huan to talk about the creative process and how design fits into their entire production pipeline. He goes on to talk about how fundamentals apply to our line of work and how we should always consider the end product to keep ourselves in check.

Then came the Q&A session. The audience asked to know more about how STiKFAS goes from idea to product, and the two creators proceeded to share how they started from mail-to-order, to signing with Hasbro as a distributor.

Almost like a mantra, the creators used the opportunity here to talk about their philosophy of “keeping it simple”.
