This week, Skan had the chance to attend Singapore Army Open House 2009 at Boon Lay Camp.

Let us have a look at what he took from this great event.

Let’s skip the armament and historical details since I am not reviewing this event as a military geek.

This was a rare event introduced by my friend Derek to inspire me.

Experience

This is what I cannot share in this article.
You must go and see it in person; looking at a picture does not

have the same effect. You will never know how cool and great these

man-made mechanics are. It is important for a concept designer to experience real

materials; feel the heaviness and know the functions which can carry to your future designs.

It will help you to be an accurate designer when you accumulate experience and visual library.

Elements and composition

As a designer it’s necessary to see the coolness of these shapes. I captured a lot of cropping images with the details and other elements which can turn into something else. Sometimes I flip them around to get the composition or merge images together to get the cool shapes.

Details

This is what you cannot find from the Internet. The detail level is only available when you see them in person. Every function has a story which will help your design to be more realistic and believable.

Textures and pattern

In this type of vehicle, there are a lot of cool patterns, levers and textures for a designer to utilize. And it’s free! No one will sue you and it becomes part of your personal reference library.

These images and experiences are very important to me as designer. I hope these images will benefit and inspire you.
