Introduction

First of all, let me introduce you to my work station at FZD. I put a few of my favorite models here to create an inspiring environment. My set up is low on maintenance, makes my table look good, and entertaining for me to look at. At first glance, all these models and toys might make me look like a typical collector, but as designer, I am very particular with what I buy as I constantly use them to learn and draw reference from, when I design and draw.

In this article, as I have been building this kind of models since I was a kid, I will share with you how I apply and use these model kits to my work and design.

1. The forms in 360 degrees

Models are like design packages in all 360 degrees; a good replica can show a lot of information about form, material, proportion and the functions of each design. By looking through the full 360 degrees of the design, you can analyze, and at the same time explore. Humans can only remember so much when we receive information in two-dimensions. But once you have a touch of it we add another layer of information in the third-dimension and, thus our memories of it will stay considerably longer. Its just like when we see the X-wing fighter in a magazine, you can learn something from it, but, the information we receive from it will be very limited, different from a model kit, or a good replica. With a good replica, we are able to explore the design from all 360 degrees and see how the forms work in the design. By playing around with a lot of models, you will start thinking in all 360 degrees; and that is the very first step of designing.

2. Understanding the functions

Good model kits of cars and motorcycles show even the engines inside and how they are put it together. Aircraft and tank models can show very nice details of the cockpits. I personally like robot models that are able to show how the joints work. Many Japanese model kits have a very good design for joints and they keep evolving with every year, and with every series. This has had a very strong influence for me when I start to design as well. When I have to design, I know exactly how to put everything together especially robots, I know how to link all the joints together and how to design all movable parts that are able to work in real life.
